Why a Dash of Patriotism Makes You a Richer and Better Employee

Flag day June 14 Flag day is something we can all wrap our heads around. It is not a national holiday; it’s a national observance. What’s the difference? Go way back. Way, way back to the days of tea parties, smoking cannons and war. June 14th was the day when our Stars and Stripes was chosen by the Continental Congress as a symbol of freedom. It still stands for that, and something we should all be able to rally around.

Put aside color and politics, culture wars and economic disparity. Think about the advantages we enjoy as a nation and there is a lot to be thankful for—a standard of living third world countries envy, relative peace and safety in a very scary world, and freedom to believe all the things that make us different. Does it affect you? In this business?

Why, yes it does. According to Forbes, flag wavers exhibit a sense of not just civic pride, but optimism about the future, a willingness to believe that the best is yet to come. That one critical attitude fosters business growth, and thus your bank account. That shared identity is a unifying force allowing us to work together for what we hope to see.

Inevitably the question arises: what makes us Americans? Americans are known for being positive, cheerful and optimistic. Coincidentally, these are also qualities of good workers and a strong economy. Want to know 101 things that chisel us into a more identifiable mold? We are individualistic, independent, friendly and helpful. We are often overweight (think barbecue, ice cream and Big Macs) and often engage in small talk when meeting people. In short, we stand out in foreign countries, as being American.

Flag of the United States of American Think about it. Social change and new business both begin with a dream premised on hope for a better tomorrow. Americans of all stripes and colors can unite for that! Hope transcends agendas and becomes rooted in us when we actually display some civic pride. So wear your red, white and blue. Wave a flag. It’s okay to hum a little Lee Greenwood.

This summer you will have opportunities to reflect on what it means to you to be an American. On a day when you feel disgruntled, think about the change you want to participate in to make us a better country. On a day when you feel happy, think about the opportunities that enrich your life. Always focus on the blessings you enjoy and be a happier person. It will show in your work and ultimately, in your paycheck.
